Introduction

As the owner of a WPI account you have been provided access to a wealth of WPI resources. With this access, you also are required to act responsibly and protect the access you have been granted. Noncompliance and/or negligence in protecting your WPI account and password may result in the revocation of access to all WPI resources.

Your Responsibilities

Please review the following information concerning your role in keeping your account safe:

  • As the owner of a WPI username, you are responsible for all actions performed by that username.
  • Your WPI account password is to be used only by you.
  • You are responsible for protecting your WPI account password.
  • You are responsible for any misuse or malicious activities using your WPI account.

Protecting Your Account

As a WPI account holder, you are required to comply with these best practices:

  • Don't be tricked into revealing your password. The only time you ever need to type your password is when logging in or changing it.
  • No one from Information Technology Services (ITS) will ever ask for your password.  You should never provide it.
  • Never share your password with anyone. This includes WPI Faculty, Staff, and Administrators.
  • If any person or email ever asks to verify your password, don't give it and report the incident immediately to the ITS Service Desk.
  • If you think someone else has discovered your password, change it immediately. If you need assistance contact the Service Desk.
  • Never use your WPI password for any account other than WPI. Other systems may be less secure than WPI and if your password is exposed on another platform, such as any social media, it is simple for malicious parties to try using your password at WPI as well.
  • Log out or lock the computer when you are not using it. If you leave your desk with the computer logged in, someone else may access and possibly misuse your files, your accounts, and systems to which you have access.
  • Contact the Information Technology (IT) Service Desk for help. If you think you have a problem that can only be solved by sharing your password with someone else (vacation, joint projects, supervisor access, etc.). IT will find an alternate solution for your particular department and circumstances.
Warning:
If anyone but the owner of a username is found logged in to that username, access to that WPI account will be terminated.
